Tell us more about your nomination for the Youth Lifesaver of the Year award.

In 2018 I was awarded Young Achiever of the Year by Surf Life Saving Western Australia and this year I am a finalist for Youth Lifesaver of the Year, in recognition of my voluntary service to Floreat Surf Life Saving Club. At Floreat, I have been a member for the last 13 years. I am also the youngest female patrol captain in Floreat’s history and am heavily involved in training members for their Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion.

What swim levels do you teach?

I teach toddlers to level sevens and adult lessons.

What are your certifications?

My swim teaching and Surf Lifesaving certifications include:

  • AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence
  • AUSTSWIM Assessor Licence
  • Surf Rescue Certificate
  • Bronze Medallion
  • Senior First Aid
  • Advanced Resuscitation Techniques
  • Pain Management Certificate
  • Silver Medallion in Beach Management

When did you start instructing?

I started instructing in October of 2015, while I was in year 12.

Your favourite part about being a swim teacher?

My favourite part about being a swimming teacher is getting to know the people I teach. I love watching them grow in confidence and accomplish things they didn’t think they were capable of achieving.

Why do you think it is so important for everyone to become a competent swimmer?

I think it is important that all people should have at least basic water safety skills because swimming is such a huge part of our culture in Australia. Swimming lessons are great, especially for children, because they teach confidence and independence in and around the water.

What is one thing people may not know about you?

I have never broken a bone in my body!

In addition to our many knowledgeable and friendly instructors such as Sam, our swim school gives children the opportunity to train like the champions with pools built to cater for high performance use. Find out more about what makes our swim school great.
